I'm Maurice Jones—a researcher, artist, and cultural organizer based in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal, Canada. I recently defended my interdisciplinary PhD in Humanities at Concordia University.
My work moves across festivals and the infrastructures of digital culture, cultural AI and the commons, the transnational governance of AI, and Black computational research-creation.

Biography
Since 2021, I am involved with MUTEK Montréal developing its professional Market component, curating the AI-focused programming of the MUTEK Forum and leading the community-engaged Future Festivals research project. From 2016 to 2022 I was the Artistic Director of the MUTEK Tokyo festival of electronic music and digital arts. Between 2024 to 2026 I led the ArtIA: Towards a Commons for AI in Digital Creation action research project at the Society for Arts and Technology.
I produce audiovisual works including the Iwakura full-dome piece together with visual artist Ali M. Demirel and ambient musician Kazuya Nagaya; the spatial sound work Soundscapes of an Earthly Community; and location-based generative sound installation feral.ai. Since early 2024, I co-lead the Wilding AI research-creation collective.
Over the years I presented my research-creation work at leading institutions including the Miraikan Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo and the Coreana Museum of Art in Seoul, and festivals including transmediale, CTM Festival, the Melbourne International Film Festival, and MUTEK in Montréal, Mexico City, and Tokyo.
I published my academic work in leading journals, such as AI & Society, New Media & Society, and Imaginations, and international conferences including the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S), the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST), and the International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA).
