LUMATRONICA

2014–2015 · Performance

Audiovisual duo formed by Luis Ramirez and Maurice Jones, performing as Lunus and Malych, active in 2014–15.

LUMATRONICA was an audiovisual duo formed by Luis Ramirez and Maurice Jones, performing as Lunus and Malych. Active in 2014–15, the project brought melodic techno and minimal house into conversation with generative visuals. It was an attempt at sonic fictioning: building a world in which rhythm could become image, light could take on a pulse, and the movement between musical styles and audiovisual practices could become a story of its own.

That story began on Aleph:

Lunus and Malych are natives of Aleph, a distant world in a different dimension. Both embarked on their own personal journeys leaving Aleph behind. Traveling through different dimensions and alternate universes, incidentally they crossed paths in this space-time continuum. It was in the year 2014 in this dimension when they joined forces and created LUMA. LUMA not only stands for Lunus and Malych, but furthermore is the Alephian word for sonoluminesence, the alchemic process of transforming sound into light. This metamorphosis is the lifeblood of LUMA. Digital Alchemy is the tool of choice for achieving this transformation in this reality.

The collaboration began in February 2014, with a first digital jam at Club Air that May. LUMA made its live debut at WOMB on 28 June 2014 for AGORIA, returned to WOMB for Cocoon on 10 November 2014, and presented an audiovisual live set with ESPIRAL at UNIT on 22 November 2014.
